4 things you should know about INEC’s BVAS and how it works
Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) is an electronic device designed to read Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and authenticate voters using their fingerprints to verify their eligibility to vote at a specific polling unit
BVAS usage entails either scanning the barcode/QR code on the PVC/Voter’s register or entering the last six digits of the Voter Identity Number or typing in the last name of the voter by the Assistant Presiding Officer (APO 1) to verify and authenticate the voter.
According to INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu, when the commission launched the little device last year, it was created to achieve two objectives. The validation of voters’ fingerprints or faces during accreditation comes first, followed by the verification of the validity of the PVCs.
BVAS will be used for uploading the polling unit results to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) in real-time on election day.
The BVAS also functions as the INEC Voter Enrollment Device when people register to vote (IVED). Also, it has taken the place of incident forms for accreditation on election day.
