3 reasons your motherboard’s Wi-Fi might be holding you back

Most of the time, the Wi-Fi specification on motherboards doesn’t receive much attention, such as the PCIe 5.0 lane count or the number of M.2 slots. Sure, some high-end boards do highlight Wi-Fi 7 on the spec sheet, but when you’re busy checking VRM phases, USB4 ports, or RGB headers, wireless connectivity is usually the last of your concerns. However, the issue is that your motherboard’s Wi-Fi can become the weak link unless you plan to rely solely on an Ethernet connection.

The problem with onboard Wi-Fi is that it usually looks better on paper than it performs in the real world. You may not notice any issues when you’re casually browsing the web, but the moment you start downloading large files, playing competitive games, or joining video calls, the flaws become harder to ignore. And once you deal with latency spikes, slower speeds, and random disconnects, it’s tough to see onboard Wi-Fi as anything more than a fallback option.

Most motherboards with onboard Wi-Fi ships with a set of external antennas in the box. I’ve seen many people use Wi-Fi without connecting these antennas to the rear I/O, unaware that they’re settling for subpar speeds and higher latency. Even when the antennas are connected, placement becomes the next hurdle. The short cables and compact bases bundled with most boards don’t give you much freedom to move them around. I have mine tucked away behind my PC, and that’s still not ideal.

The issue is that most PC users keep their cases beneath their desks or right next to a wall, which makes it almost impossible for the antennas to get a clear line of sight to the router. This setup forces the signal to fight through walls, furniture, and electronic interference before it even reaches your network. As a result, you’ll experience inconsistent speeds, latency spikes, and weaker reception than you’d expect from a Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 module. Unless you find a way to give the antennas a clear line of sight to the router, your motherboard’s onboard Wi-Fi will struggle to match the stability of a well-positioned USB Wi-Fi adapter sitting on your desk.

Another problem with onboard Wi-Fi is that it’s tied to the year the motherboard came out. For instance, my Asus Strix X570-E motherboard shipped with Wi-Fi 6 back in 2019, which was cutting-edge back then, but as of 2025, it’s two generations behind the latest standard: Wi-Fi 7. Even if you bought a high-end motherboard just two years ago, it probably doesn’t have Wi-Fi 7. So, if you already own a Wi-Fi 7 router for other devices like your phone or tablet, your motherboard’s Wi-Fi won’t be able to take advantage of the extra bandwidth or lower latency.

Sure, you could argue that Wi-Fi 6 and 6E are still more than fast enough for most internet connections today, but that’s not really the point. What matters is that your motherboard is locked to the standard that was available at launch, and it doesn’t keep up with the rest of your network as you upgrade. Your only option would be to get a USB or PCIe Wi-Fi adapter that supports the newer standard, unless you’re willing to pay full price for a new board.

Ethernet is still king

There’s no doubt that Wi-Fi has come a long way in terms of speed, stability, and latency, but as a desktop PC user, you can’t ignore the advantages of a wired connection. If you have a laptop, leaning on Wi-Fi makes sense due to the convenience, but desktop PCs typically sit in one spot for years, making them perfect candidates for Ethernet. Once you run a cable from your PC to your router, you don’t have to worry about signal strength, interference, or antenna placement ever again.

Ethernet doesn’t just give you more consistent internet speeds; it ensures you get the full performance your internet plan can actually deliver. Modern motherboards now ship with 2.5GbE, 5GbE, and 10GbE ports, but even today, a standard Gigabit port is more than enough to max out most home internet plans. That means you don’t have to worry about falling behind the latest wireless standards. And let’s not forget that Ethernet delivers rock-solid latency that even Wi-Fi 7 struggles to match. That’s exactly why I treat onboard Wi-Fi as a fallback rather than my primary connection.

Onboard Wi-Fi is convenient, but it’s not always reliable

Onboard Wi-Fi is one of those features that’s nice to have but rarely matches the advertised claims in real-world use. Sure, it’s convenient to get your PC online without worrying about running cables or buying adapters, but that convenience often comes with trade-offs you don’t notice until you really put your connection to the test. Even if your board supports Wi-Fi 7, you’re still at the mercy of antenna placement, interference, and fluctuating latency that’s typical with wireless connections. When you have a far more trustworthy Ethernet port built into the same motherboard, it makes little sense to rely on onboard Wi-Fi for anything beyond backup use. For desktop use, the convenience of going wireless doesn’t outweigh the reliability, stability, and consistency that a simple cable provides.
