Gmail is introducing a shortcut that allows users to quickly copy verification codes directly from their inbox on both Android and iOS.
Upon receiving an OTP or verification code, Gmail now displays a ‘Copy Code’ button, which may appear within the email and, in certain instances, also shows up in the main inbox next to the message preview.
The feature is being made available through the Gmail app on both platforms. Similar functionality for codes received via the Messages app was already available on Android.
How Gmail’s Copy Code Button Works and Its Limitations
When an OTP appears in the inbox, Gmail displays a small card at the top of the email, situated below the subject line, which includes the verification code together with a Copy Code button. Users are then able to tap the button and paste the code into the required place, rather than having to type it in manually or select and copy it from the email.
The Copy Code button has also begun to appear directly within the main inbox together with the email preview. The implementation doesn’t appear to work each time, whereas the shortcut inside the emails works more reliably.
Gmail’s version doesn’t currently have direct integration with Gboard, meaning that users have to open Gmail and copy the code themselves. It is a useful improvement as it speeds up the process of handling email verification codes, even with this limitation.
The feature is now being rolled out as part of the most recent Gmail update for both Android and iOS users. Those who haven’t seen it yet should make sure they have updated the Gmail app to the latest version.
The shortcut within the inbox is currently less consistent than the one inside the email itself, and Gmail has not stated that Gboard integration will be added at a later date.
