WhatsApp Adds Filters and Backgrounds for Video Calls

WhatsApp’s filters and backgrounds prioritize fun and artsy looks, as opposed to the more formal backdrops preferred by traditional video conferencing apps.

Video calls on WhatsApp are about to get a little more fun. The messaging platform announced Tuesday that it’s adding filters and backgrounds to video chats.

In the coming weeks, WhatsApp will make 10 filters and 10 backgrounds available to its Android and iOS users worldwide. You’ll be able to access these options in both 1:1 and group video calls by tapping the “Effects” icon on the top right of the screen.

The filter options include Warm, Cool, Black & White, Light leak, Dreamy, Prism light, Fisheye, Vintage TV, Frosted glass, and Duo tone, and the background options include Blur, Living room, Office, Cafe, Pebbles, Foodie, Smoosh, Beach, Sunset, Celebration, and Forest. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared a few examples on his WhatsApp channel.

In addition to filters and backgrounds, WhatsApp has two other new features coming to video calls: Touch Up and Low Light. These options can enhance the look and brightness of the environment and can make video call footage look more polished.

The Meta-owned platform hasn’t announced a specific launch date for these features, but it will be available to everyone “in the coming weeks.” Keeping your app updated will ensure you’ll get the new features when they launch.

WhatsApp backgrounds may be Meta’s latest effort to keep the app feeling fresh and competitive with its other messaging apps, like Facebook Messenger and Instagram. All three apps offer voice and video calls, as well as AI-powered features and group chats.
