WhatsApp has started blocking logins on Android and iOS devices that run an outdated operating system. The check is a server-side change, so it works regardless of the installed WhatsApp version, and it is rolling out to specific accounts on both platforms. Affected users see a new screen asking them to update the device software before they can continue.
The screen cannot be skipped. Until the operating system is updated, WhatsApp does not let the account log in on that device. Because the check runs on WhatsApp’s servers, installing a newer WhatsApp build alone does not clear the screen.
How the WhatsApp OS Update Requirement Works
WhatsApp’s login screen tells users to open the device settings and install the latest available system update. It also explains how to check the software version currently installed, for anyone unsure which release the phone runs. Once the update is in place, WhatsApp opens normally and the login can be completed.
The reasoning is device security. Attackers look for known vulnerabilities in outdated operating systems to install malware, and malware on a phone can capture data before WhatsApp encrypts it.
End-to-end encryption protects messages, but it cannot protect content an attacker has already grabbed on the device, and every other app on that phone is exposed in the same way.
The block does not point to a flaw in WhatsApp itself. WhatsApp relies on the security guarantees of the operating system, and those guarantees weaken when the system is no longer current, so the app now refuses to proceed with a login on obsolete software.
The requirement is the latest in a series of account protections. WhatsApp recently tested a warning for people who connect through unofficial WhatsApp Web clients, after notifying around 200 users in Italy whose devices were compromised through a fake version of the app.
A Scam Alert feature detects suspicious messages on the device, and restricted chats limit certain conversations to the primary device.
What WhatsApp Users Should Do Now
Users on older phones can avoid being locked out by updating before the check reaches their account:
- Open the device settings and check which operating system version is currently installed.
- Install the latest system update the device offers.
- Open WhatsApp and complete the login after the update has finished.
There is no workaround inside WhatsApp. A phone that cannot install a newer operating system will keep showing the update screen, since the app offers no way to bypass it.
WhatsApp has not announced which Android or iOS versions trigger the block. Accounts that do not see the screen today can still get it later if the device software falls below WhatsApp’s minimum requirement.
