One of the most popular online dating apps on iOS and Android, Tinder, has hit the number 1 spot in the top grossing category on Apple’s App Store for the first time.
Tinder is a free, location-based mobile dating app that simplifies the process most dating websites require. You simply download the app to your smart phone, link to your Facebook account, choose up to six photos of yourself, and write a brief bio. That’s it!
Started as a free service, Tinder added two subscription-based models for its users later on — Tinder Plus and Tinder Gold — which came with added benefits over and above the free service that still exists.
Tinder Plus was released by the company in 2015, which gave users options like, unlimited likes, ‘Rewind’ that lets them reverse an accidental swipe and ‘Passport’ which lets users check out profiles and find a match in areas outside their current physical geographical location.
In addition to these, Tinder Plus also gives users additional features in limited amounts that can be added-on later for extra payment. These include ‘Super Like’ and ‘Tinder Boost’.
Super Liking another user will ensure that they know you liked them even before they swipe left or right as a big blue star will be put as an indicator. Tinder Boost makes your profile the top-most profile in the area and it appears before any one else’s for a specific period of time.
Both these features are available in limited quantities with an option to increase that number. Tinder Plus also helps users in doing away with ad units which are shown in the free version of the app — another revenue stream for the company.
Tinder Gold is a Major Reason
The other option, Tinder Gold, which was being tested in several countries since June 2017, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, and Mexico, has been rolled out for all iOS users globally on August 29, 2017.
In addition to all features available on Tinder Plus, the ‘Likes You’ feature in this subscription allows users to see who has liked them before they can swipe. This not only saves a lot of time but also gives users an added advantage.
In another tweet, Norgard said, “A friend just messaged me that Tinder is now the #1 grossing application in 41 countries.”
While the company is yet to confirm that what exactly propelled Tinder to the top of the chart at the App Store, the popularity of the new Tinder Gold subscription seems to be one of the major reasons.
Tinder Gold was launched globally on Tuesday and Tinder topped the App Store charts on Wednesday. According to App Annie, Tinder had been among the top 15 highest grossing apps as per daily revenue since the beginning of 2017.
Tinder is being used by users in over 190 countries and boasts of 1.6 billion swipes per day, 26 million matches per day and 1.5 dates per week globally.
